Join us at 12 noon on Tuesday October 12 for a free, open to all, program on recent research into the identity of a carved portrait bust finial on a desk and bookcase made in Philadelphia c. 1770 in the collection of Woodford Mansion in East Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. You can register for the event here. You can also sign up for the program at Woodford Mansion’s website under the Events tab.
This portrait finial, on the personal desk of both Joe Kindig, Jr. and Joe Kindig III, was first published in a December 1971 article by Robert C. Smith in The Magazine Antiques. It was included in the exhibition American Rococo, 1750-1775: Elegance in Ornament and illustrated in the accompanied catalogue by Morrison H. Hechscher and Leslie Greene Bowman. The authors of both publications described the finial bust as a “portrait of a young man.” The identity of the portrait bust has now been confirmed and will add context and expand our understanding of the the two surviving finial busts of John Milton (1608-1674) and five surviving finial busts of John Locke (1632-1704) carved in Philadelphia as ornaments for desk and bookcases.
